Communications Design Specialist II

Location: Métis Nation of Alberta Provincial Head Office (Edmonton)

Closing Date: November 13, 2022

Position Status:

One (1) full-time permanent position (40 hours/week)

One (1) full-time temporary position (6 months with possibility of extension)

The Organization

Since its inception in 1928, the Métis Nation of Alberta (MNA) has governed the Métis within Alberta. The MNA is led by a democratically elected Provincial Council, comprised of a Provincial President, a Provincial Vice-President, and six regional Presidents and Vice-Presidents. This Council works toward the mandate of the MNA, supporting practices of transparency, accountability, and inclusiveness for Métis Albertans in governments’ policy and decision-making processes. The Opportunity

The MNA is recruiting for two (2) individuals to fill the position of Communications Design Specialist II – one full-time permanent position, and one full-time temporary position.

The MNA Communications department is a dynamic team of professionals responsible for coordinating public and media relations, as well as internal communications, including marketing and other forms of promotion. The Communications Design Specialist II is a creative problem solver and team player who can take direction from written or spoken ideas and convert them into effective visual designs. Reporting to the Creative Manager, the Communications Design Specialist II is primarily responsible for collaborating with a variety of individuals to develop new design concepts, graphics, and layouts in both print and digital media. This work may include advertising and marketing campaigns, event collateral, brochures, newsletters, reports, forms, specialty items, and a variety of other projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create compelling visual concepts that inform, inspire, and engage our audience
  • Design and produce a range of communications materials consistent with MNA brand standards
  • Work under tight deadlines and changing priorities while satisfying client expectations and carrying several projects at once
  • Liaise with vendors (printers, promotional suppliers, newspapers, etc.) to establish budgets and production schedules
  • Prepare and pre-flight documents for printing, ensuring that all prepress procedures are followed
  • Provide photography services at events as needed
  • Process, edit, enhance, and organize photos following industry best practices

Skills & Competencies

  • Solid understanding of graphic design principles (typography, layout, hierarchy, etc.)
  • High level proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud applications, including InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop, in a Windows environment
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Solid knowledge of four-color printing process, and the ability to pre-flight and package files
  • Experience preparing artwork for a variety of formats including screen printing and laser engraving
  • Strong organizational and time management skills; able to manage multiple projects and competing priorities
  • Detail-oriented, with the ability to work accurately under tight deadlines
  • Self-starter who takes initiative with minimal direction and supervision
  • Excellent communication skills; not afraid to ask questions and request feedback
  • Strong interpersonal skills; comfortable working in a collaborative, open-office setting

Qualifications

  • Graphic design degree or a graphic communications certificate (equivalent may be considered)
  • A minimum of 3 years working experience in graphic design

Other Requirements

  • Position is based at the Métis Nation of Alberta Provincial Head Office in Edmonton, Alberta
  • Applicants must reside in the greater Edmonton metropolitan area
  • Ability to work occasional overtime, including evenings and weekends (e.g. event photography)
  • Travel within Alberta is a requirement. Additional, less frequent, out-of-province travel may also occur, with notice.
  • Must have a driver’s license as well as an operational vehicle
