Johnathon Vaughn Strebly

Johnathon is a visionary leader in creative and systems-thinking, known for guiding organizations through growth while staying true to their core values.

With expertise in capacity-building, intergovernmental relations, First Nations relations, and system and service design, he has enabled numerous organizations to collaborate effectively and achieve their strategic goals.

Johnathon was born 1967, in Vancouver, BC. A second generation Canadian, his Polish/Ukrainian grandparents immigrated to Canada in the mid 1930’s, settling in Saskatchewan overseeing farms. His mother was born in Foam Lake, Saskatchewan and moved to vancouver when she was 16. Johnathon was born and raised in East Vancouver. He attended schools in Vancouver focusing on creative arts where drawing and painting soon led to photography. Honing his skills as a commercial photographer in the fashion and music industry, Johnathon would provide his imagery in visual context in editorial layouts, advertisements, book design, and other media awakening the desire and appreciation for the power of communication design.

Johnathon has built teams fostering supportive cultures, managed communications, and directed strategic plans across multiple disciplines, making him a valuable asset for organizations seeking positive social impact. As a strategic advisor for Renewal Development, he promotes sustainable community-based development in the Pacific Northwest by advocating for the relocation and repurposing of high-value homes.

In his role as Chief of Staff for the Skwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw, Squamish Nation, he provided strategic leadership across various departments, aligning with the Squamish Nation Strategic Plan. As COO of Tomorrow Creative Services, he facilitated transformational change for organizational leaders.

Johnathon has led numerous design advocacy projects, including the Canadian Typographic Archive, driven by his concern for human issues beyond typical design considerations. His leadership extended globally as President of the International Council of Design (ICoD) from 2019 to 2022, where he upheld the Council’s humanist values and maintained its esteemed standing.

Johnathon’s relentless advocacy for the design industry is matched by his dedication to nurturing and mentoring the next generation of designers. His charisma as a Master of Ceremonies and keynote speaker, coupled with his commitment to advancing the field of design through work with DesCan, highlights his collaborative spirit.

A founder of The Notice Group, former Director of Creative Services for HCMA Architecture +Design, and past President of Design Professionals of Canada, Johnathon’s advocacy for inclusivity, sustainability, and ethical design practices make him an exceptional role model. His passion for building community has established strong networks in Vancouver, Canada, and abroad.
