Short Description

Job Summary   

Communications, Marketing & Creative Services supports Dalhousie University’s strategic priorities by working with departments and units to tell the stories of the students, faculty, and staff. Reporting to the Senior Manager, Graphic Design, the Graphic Designer is a key provider of design and technical support used in the creative execution of the Dalhousie brand for purposes of advancing recruitment, reputation and fundraising. As such, they must deliver relevant and compelling visual communications for a diverse range of audiences for print and digital mediums.

Key Responsibilities      

  • Create, develop and apply visual communications consistent with Dalhousie’s brand strategy and appropriate to target audiences. Assist the broader university community and external suppliers in understanding and applying Dalhousie’s brand guidelines.
  • Analyze, identify and develop the conceptual and tactical visual direction of university communications in consultation with clients and the Creative Director, and provide solutions within a complex framework defined by brand image design standards, budget, audience considerations, and time.
  • Create artwork for print and/or digital production and apply professional skills in digital layout, image editing, typography, illustration, and electronic pre-press. Apply best technological solutions – creatively and functionally – to support communications initiatives.
  • Organize and maintain project resource and image files plus administrative documentation for referral, efficient reuse and record keeping.
  • Provide customer service and consultation for general inquiries around visual application of the university brand, project scheduling and traffic management.
  • Oversee production from outside contractors and vendors, to ensure appropriate application of branding, and compliance with image standards.

The successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (a combination of in-person work on campus and remote work) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines.

Required Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree or college diploma in design plus three to five years’ professional experience (or equivalent combination of training and experience).
  • Expertise in various graphic design, image editing and support software, including Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat); Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Word, Excel); major social media platforms (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, TikTok, etc.).
  • Must be able to work in a deadline-driven environment and able to work effectively with all members of the university community, including senior management.

Assets  

  • Experience with video editing, motion graphics programs (Final Cut Pro, Motion, After Effects, Premiere, etc.); email marketing platforms (SimplyCast, Mailchimp, etc.); and content management systems (WordPress, SquareSpace, etc.) are considered strong assets
  • A solid understanding of HTML, CSS, and Javascript is an asset, as is experience in User Interface design, Adobe Experience Manager, Adobe Touch UI, and SharePoint.
